TIGER CUBS (1st Grade)

Go See It! – A Child’s Life in Early America
Through role-playing activities, scouts will increase their understanding of what it was like to be a child in Colonial America. They will examine and handle clothing and artifacts as they act out parts of a typical child’s day. Each scout will work with clay to make marbles and a burlap carrying bag.

Early American Toys & Tales
Learn about life in Colonial America by examining, handling and playing with replicas of traditional early-American toys. Scouts will learn about primary and secondary colors and how to mix them. Each participant will make and paint a top to take home.

WOLF (2nd Grade)

Tools for Fixing and Building
During this program, scouts will learn to identify and learn the safe and proper handling of a screwdriver, handsaw, claw hammer, awl, c-clamp, coping saw, hacksaw, file and plane. During a practice session, they will have hands-on time with some of the tools. Then they will make a wooden craft to take home.

Play a Game – Early American Toys & Tales
Explore life in Colonial America by handling and examining replicas of traditional Early American toys. Some of the games that will be played include ring toss, ninepins, marbles, cup and ball. Each participant will work with clay to make marbles and a burlap bag to hold them.

Simple Machines
Early Americans used timeless innovations to perform daily tasks and chores. Scouts explore the functions of the inclined plane, screw, lever, wedge, wheel and axle, and pulley through hands-on examination of the Museum’s artifacts. Each Cub Scout will make a pinwheel craft to take home.

BEAR (3rd Grade)

The Past is Exciting and Important
The Museum of Early Trades & Crafts building is a national historic landmark that originally housed a library and became a museum in 1969. Learn about the history of the building and how people in communities lived and worked. Discover how books were printed hundreds of years ago. See how an original 19th century printing press was used. Scouts will create a journal and take home a family tree to complete with their families.

Sawdust and Nails
During this session, scouts will learn the proper handling of a screwdriver, hand drill, hammer, plane and saw, and how to use them to build a simple toolbox or other craft. The program consists of a brief history of tools, a short practice with tools and making a project to take home.

WEBELOS (4th Grade)

Early American Schoolhouse
Discover what it was like to be a student attending a one-room schoolhouse in Colonial times. Scouts will role-play a day at “school,” arriving with such “school supplies” as buckets and logs, in addition to more traditional items like books and slates. They will learn about the lessons taught in school, and the very different rules for both students and teachers during that time. Scouts will make a traditional hornbook and write in it with quill pens.

Craftsman
During this session, scouts will learn the proper handling of a screwdriver, hand drill, hammer, plane and saw, and how to use them to build a simple toolbox or other craft. The program consists of a brief history of tools, a short practice with tools, and making a project to take home.
