| DAISY GIRL SCOUT PETALS Program
time 1½ hours Honest and Fair Petal Explore life in Colonial America by handling and examining replicas of traditional Early American toys while focusing on fairness. Games played will include ring toss, ninepins, cup and ball, and Jacob’s ladder. Each girl will paint a top to take home. Program will conclude with a corresponding story of honesty and fairness from a 19th century McGuffey’s Eclectic Reader. Use Resources Wisely Petal Through role-playing activities, Girl Scouts will increase their understanding of life as a child in Colonial America, as they act out parts of a typical child’s day. Girls will be exposed to the wise use of resources through the eyes of an Early American child by making a cornhusk doll, and ending with a corresponding story from a McGuffey’s Eclectic Reader. |
| BROWNIE TRY-ITS Program
time 1½ hours Puppets, Dolls, and Plays Try-It Girls will complete Requirements 2 & 6 Early American children often made their own toys from common objects found around the house. Girls will make and decorate a traditional doll from a wooden spoon. In groups, girls will write their dolls’ stories to be read or acted out loud. Let’s Pretend Try-It Girls will complete Requirements 1, 3 & 4 Explore life in Colonial America through dressing-up and role-playing the life of an Early American girl. Girl Scouts will participate in a game created to mime the actions of chores girls would have done during colonial times. |
| JUNIOR GIRL SCOUT PROFICIENCY BADGES Program time 1½ hours Local Lore Badge Girls will complete Requirements 4 & 7 The METC building, a national historic landmark originally housing a library, became a museum in 1969. This program focuses on the building’s architecture and history. Girls will tour the building and participate in various activities, including making rubbings and a FACTS architecture activity. Prints and Graphics Badge Girls will complete Requirements 1, 2, 4, & 10 Colonial folks enjoyed decorating their homes and objects just as we do today. Girl Scouts will make and design a simple book while learning about the art of stenciling, stamping designs, and textured rubbings, which will be included in their books. |
| GIRL SCOUTS 11-17 INTEREST PROJECTS Program time 2 hours Artistic Crafts Interest Project Girls will complete Skill Builders 1 & 3 Early America was built upon the skills of many talented colonial tradesmen. Girl Scouts will learn about the history of these craftsmen’s hand tools. Girls will be taught the proper use of tools and conclude with building a wooden birdhouse to take home. Women Through Time Interest Project Girls will complete Skill Builders 5 & 6, Technology 4 Through role-playing, Girl Scouts will experience a day in the life of a woman in Early America including a discussion of the skills, domestic arts and crafts practiced by women. Girls will stencil a quilt block OR make their own beads for stringing. |
| Service Hours Available for Girl Scouts 11-17: Opportunities exist for girls working toward the Silver Award and the Gold Award. Girls can receive credit for service hours provided to the Museum by assisting with younger Girl Scout troops or other groups participating in METC programs.
